Flower Care

Use Flower Food

That little packet is more powerful than it looks — don't skip it.

Flower food packets contain three key ingredients: sugar to fuel the blooms, an acidifier to improve water uptake and lower pH, and a biocide to inhibit bacterial growth. Together, they address all three primary causes of premature wilting.

Many people skip the packet or use only half, thinking it won't make a difference. In testing, flowers kept with proper flower food last 30–60% longer than those kept in plain water.

Follow the instructions on the packet for the correct ratio. Too much sugar can actually promote bacterial growth and harm the flowers, so the measured dose matters.

If you run out of flower food packets, a DIY alternative works reasonably well: 1 tablespoon white sugar, 1 tablespoon white vinegar, and a few drops of bleach per quart of water. It's not as effective as commercial flower food, but it addresses the same core needs.
